The Herzog August Library (HAB) in Wolfenbüttel is one of Germany’s oldest and most renowned research libraries. Founded in 1572 by Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, it was later named after his successor. Duke August, who expanded it in the 17th century into a leading institution for scholars and researchers.

The library houses an extraordinary collection of manuscripts, early prints, books, and documents from different historical eras. Its holdings span theology, philosophy, history, literature, and the natural sciences. Particularly famous is its vast collection of medieval manuscripts and incunabula (books printed before 1501).
