Expertise in Nuclear Waste Disposal: Our Research Centre in Braunschweig<\/strong>
Our Repository Research Center in Braunschweig conducts applied basic research on the safety of repositories for radioactive waste. Our work ranges from geological studies of host rocks in our geoscience laboratory to the development of safety assessment concepts for long-term storage and the simulation software required for such analyses. <\/p>

Who We Are<\/strong>
We\u2019re not radioactive ourselves \u2013 but we deal with the safety of almost everything related to radioactivity: from nuclear power plants and the transport of radioactive materials to radiation protection and the interim and final storage of radioactive waste.Around 300 scientists work with us at sites in Cologne, Garching near Munich, Berlin, and Braunschweig, conducting research, developing technologies, and providing expert assessments across Germany. <\/p>

As a non-profit organization with public ownership, our work is dedicated to the common good. Most of our activities are funded through publicly supported research projects and expert reports. Our clients include the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the European Commission. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What Comes After Germany\u2019s Nuclear Phase-Out?<\/strong>
Even after Germany\u2019s nuclear exit, ensuring the safety of nuclear installations will remain one of our core responsibilities in the coming decades \u2013 alongside decommissioning nuclear power plants and managing nuclear waste disposal. A glance across Europe shows why: in several neighboring countries, nuclear power is experiencing a revival \u2013 through lifetime extensions of existing plants, the construction of new reactors, and even the development of entirely new reactor designs. <\/p>

With our work, we contribute to ensuring that Germany and Europe remain as well protected as possible from nuclear risks.We provide the technical foundation that allows the German government to advocate for high safety standards at the international level. For example, we monitor and assess safety-related developments abroad \u2013 from corrosion cracks in French nuclear power plants to the threats to Ukrainian nuclear facilities posed by the Russian war of aggression.We also support emergency preparedness in Germany, for instance as part of the Federal Radiological Situation Center. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
