Federal Aviation Office – Ensuring Compliance with Safety Regulations
The Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt, LBA) was established by law on November 30, 1954, as Germany’s federal authority for civil aviation. It operates under the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). Headquartered in Braunschweig, the LBA also maintains regional offices in Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Berlin.
The LBA is responsible for more than 100 approval, certification, and supervisory functions. Through these tasks, it ensures both the high personnel, technical, and operational safety standards of civil aviation in Germany (Safety) and the security of air cargo transport and compliance with safety measures by airlines (Security).
