What's the catch?
Thünen Institute – Fisheries
The Thünen Institute focuses on three main research areas in the field of fisheries:
- Status of FishStocks:Fish stocks are continuously monitored. We analyze the ongoing development of populations in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the North Atlantic, while also improving monitoring methodologies. In addition, we operate the online portal “Fischbestände Online”, a comprehensive source of information for the fishing industry.
- Fishing and Technology: We investigate the environmental impacts of fisheries and develop improved fishing methods.
- Fisheries Regulation: Fisheries are regulated through international cooperation. The Thünen Institute contributes to the recommendations of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which form the scientific basis for EU fishing quotas. We also develop concepts for regulating recreational fisheries and provide scientific foundations for rebuilding the European eel population.
Research Questions
Wild fish is an excellent yet vulnerable resource. To ensure the sustainable use of fish stocks while preserving healthy marine ecosystems, political measures such as catch quotas are necessary. The Thünen Institute is dedicated to providing the scientific basis for these measures while also developing innovative fishing technologies.
